Katy resident, Patrice (who doesn't wish to use her full name) and her husband were in the Lowe’s parking lot at 19935 Katy Freeway when a man attempted to carjack their truck. He did manage to get into their vehicle and demanded them to drive. This occurred Monday, June 28 a little after 8:00 p.m.

Husband to the Rescue

"My husband stopped it," says Patrice. "One key point is that my husband’s jacket was hanging in the hook in the backseat where the carjacker came in."

Patrice says that the jacket got in the carjackers way.

"At that point the man demanded that my husband drive so my husband put the car in reverse and was able to throw the man out the car because the back door was still open," says Patrice.

Once out of their vehicle, the man ran into Lowe's and her husband followed, took a picture and spoke to the store manager, who they say wasn't helpful.

Man Later Claimed he Thought the Car was His Own

He called the police and was told that there wasn’t much that they could do as the man, when questioned, claimed he thought the vehicle was his.

Patrice is thankful for her husband's quick thinking and the jacket that got in the way.

"We are still dealing with it psychological because it is causing us to rethink many things especially seeing that we are trying to get our business up and running again in Houston," says Patrice.

Over the years, Katy Magazine has had readers report numerous crimes at Lowe's probably due to the quick access to I-10.

Tip to Avoid Carjackings:

  • Stay alert and aware of your surroundings.

  • Keep you cell phone charged and with you.

  • Keep your vehicle doors locked.

If you notice suspicious activity, stay in a public place and call authorities.
