Math equations, science projects and research papers.  Ah, yes, we've all had to do them.  But now that our kids are in school, can we, as parents, still do them? Luckily, parents and students can access great resources to help solve for X and properly cite an essay. Don't worry, help is here.

Live Tutoring Program

The Fort Bend County Library offers a free live tutoring program, “Brainfuse HelpNow” to students from kindergarten to grade 12. The program offers help in a broad range of subjects including math, science, social studies, English, Spanish, and Advanced Placement/Dual Credit.

 

Accessing the Program

  • Available seven days a week, from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm with no time limits

  • Students may also submit questions any time of the day or night, and emailed responses will arrive within 24 hours.

  • Students may access this resource from any computer, whether at home, school, or at the library.

 

 

24-Hour Writing Lab Available

“Brainfuse HelpNow" includes a 24-hour writing lab, which allows students to submit papers online to trained writing instructors at any time; students receive feedback within 24 hours. Writing experts evaluate the submitted paper and provide constructive comments with the aim of helping students become better writers.

 

Subjects Covered by Tutors

  • Math: basic skills, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus

  • Science: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth-science subjects 

  • Social studies:  American history, world history, and political science

  • English/language arts: writing, reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary skills, as well as help in English literature

 

Utilizing Tools to Enhance Curriculum

The Skills Building section in which students may receive additional exercises to help them master the concepts being taught in their homework lessons. Skills-building lessons involve one-to-one sessions with live instructors. These tutors utilize a library of field-tested, state-aligned lessons, including age-appropriate content, reading passages, simulated test questions, and worksheets to help students master key academic areas.

 

Certified tutors in the program must have a four-year college degree and have completed extensive background and reference checks.  

 

College Tutors has subject-specific expertise. This allows your student to focus where help is most needed. College Tutors match your child with the right tutor for their specific academic needs and their learning style.

Khan Academy

 

Khan Academy offers no ads and no subscriptions but plenty of free practice exercises, free instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that helps learners from kindergarten to post college study at their own pace. They offer “how-to” videos on grammar, history, math, science, computer programming, art history, economics, test prep, AP courses and many other subjects.

 

Khan Academy has also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

 

Shmoop

 

Shmoop offers free Learning Guides, Online Courses, College Readiness Prep, and Test Prep that balance a teen-friendly, approachable style with academically rigorous materials to help students understand why they should care. Shmoop has and continues to grow their vast library of thousands of videos, covering everything from literature and history to math and finance. The English Literature videos Shmoop offers, helps all leveled students with a visual inside view of the novels they are expected to read.

 

Shmoop also offers study guides on a variety of subjects, including math, science, history, writing,  literature, SAT, ACT, and AP test prep.
