Katy ISD Police to Address Cyber Safety Concerns at Upcoming Parent Event

This Thursday, October 24, is Cyber Safety Outreach Day. Locally, the Katy ISD Police Department will host an important program to educate the community on essential safety precautions and potential online threats to children.

 

The Katy ISD Police Department has partnered with Crime Stoppers and four other local school district police departments to host this first city-wide event.  In Katy, the event will be held Thursday, October 24 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, 6301 South Stadium Lane.

 

Goal of the Event

At the event, Crime Stoppers of Houston and local law enforcement aim to empower parents, guardians, family and the community with valuable information about cybersecurity so they can be safe and secure online.

 

The program will cover important topics:

  • Cyber safety trends

  • Potential dangers such as predatory activity and inappropriate exposures

  • Popular apps and games

  • Safety settings/restrictions

  • Recommended monitoring tools

  • Laws as they relate to cyber safety

Note: the presentation in Katy is NOT suitable for children.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month

The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Careers and Studies (NICCS) promotes October as National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) to stress the importance of taking proactive steps to enhance cybersecurity at home and in the workplace.

 

Protecting Your Home and Business

The message of NCSAM 2019 is “Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT.” Their goal is to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. They offer resources for individuals to assure they’re safer and more secure online.
