Faith West Academy's high school theater students can perform in approximately ten productions a year, which is significantly greater than the majority of high schools in the area or across the country.
Faith West Academy in Katy is a small school but offers more opportunities than most area schools or schools anywhere around the country. "You are not 1 in 1,000’s but 1 in 100’s," says Daniel James Barrett, Theater Director. "Over the past six years, we have produced 42 shows which averages out to seven show per year." This year, for example, the average high school theater student would be in four productions, two school-wide productions, a musical and a play, TAPPS One Act Play Competition, and a class production.
Our daughter Casey was in her first school play in 6th grade. Casey is now a Junior and has performed in multiple productions each year," says Cheri Larson. "She has been given her amazing opportunities that have bolstered her self esteem and confidence and will have a lasting impact in her life."
Balancing Theater and Sports Activities
Six years ago Faith West's administration instituted Fine Arts Wednesdays allowing students to miss a sports practice and participate in Theater, Band, Art, or Choir rehearsals. This way a football player or cheerleader can also be in productions. "You will find that in most schools you have to choose sports or theater but here at FWA you can do both," Says Barrett.
Honors and Accolades
Faith West Academy has received numerous recognitions and competitive wins. "I am so proud that our students have done very well at competitions," says Barett. "Depending on the year, all or at least half of our cast and crew have been recognized with awards including the top honors of Best Actor and Actress of the entire competition." The school has participated in TAPPS One Act Play Competition for the last five years.
