Katy ISD Community Education Courses Filling for Spring 2019

The Spring 2019 Katy ISD Community Education classes are open for registration. The purpose of Community Education is to provide the general public with learning opportunities including self-improvement, enrichment, recreation and academic courses.

Community Education Program

For the past 27 years, Katy ISD has operated a community education program that has grown to include almost 3000 participants per semester.

The purpose of Community Education is to provide the general public with learning opportunities. These opportunities include self-improvement, enrichment, recreation, and academic courses.

Learn New Skills

You are invited to take advantage of this opportunity to develop your interests, learn new skills and make new friends.

The Community Education Program of Katy ISD is conducted for the benefit and enjoyment of community patrons. Classes are held on Katy ISD campuses.

Payment and Attendance

Classes are offered for non-credit. Financial support for the program comes from the class fees. Payment for classes must, therefore, be received before students attend classes. Certificates of completion are issued for most classes.

A minimum of 80% attendance is required to obtain a certificate of completion. Children are not to be brought to class.Classes will begin as scheduled without notification.

No confirmation of enrollment is sent out and you will be notified only if the class is cancelled, or the schedule changes.

Registration can be completed by mail, phone, fax or in person.

Check - Mail the completed registration form and a check or money order made payable to Katy ISD Community Education.

Mastercard/Visa - Mail the completed registration form that includes credit/debit card number, expiration date, and name of cardholder as it appears on the card to: Katy ISD Community Education Office 6301 S. Stadium Lane Katy, TX 77494

Telephone - registration is available to individuals wishing to charge their fees to Mastercard or Visa only. Please have the following information ready: course name and number, credit/debit card number, expiration date, and name of cardholder as it appears on the card. The Katy ISD Community Education Office is available Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at (281) 396-6365.

In Person - You may register in person at the Katy ISD Community Education Office located at the Katy ISD Education Support Complex, 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Some of the many classes offered are listed below.

Salsa & Latin Dancing - Beginner

A fun and easy to follow class on Latin dancing basics for beginners! You will be introduced to the basics of Salsa, Merengue and Bachata. This class is designed for beginners with no dance experience but looking to learn some social dance skills. This class is also great for anyone looking to brush up on Latin dance basics. Partners encouraged but not necessary.

Painting for Beginners - Acrylics

There are no limits to what a beginner can achieve with acrylic paints. It is just a matter of learning from the beginning some elements and principles of design, as well as the variety of brushes and other tools, the color basic, color circle, color terminology and color combinations. The palettes and several techniques can be used in a wide selection of themes with this wonderful and versatile medium. A supply list will be provided at the first class.

Zumba Fitness

This dance-fitness program will let you experience the joy of moving to rhythms of international music. The Latin-inspired program is for basic beginner dancers and active older adults, guaranteed to provide the participant with a safe and effective total body workout. Bring a bottle of water and a mat to incorporate yoga poses for a total cool down.

Upholstery

Basic techniques used in upholstery. Learn fabric textiles, trim making, padding, lining and foam, button making and tufting, pattern making and stripping. Projects can be dining chair bottoms, bar stool seats, bench seats, ottomans, tufted wall panels or other small items. Purchasing supplies and tools will be discussed the first night of class. Students MUST bring their own sewing machines and a project to work on.

French Baking - Choux Pastry Eclairs

Bring a swing to it. We will bake delicious eclairs and fill them with pastry cream then top them with a beautiful glaze of chocolate. Making this classic French pastry will be easier than you think. A supply fee of $10 is to be paid to the instructor on the first night of class. A supply list will be provided prior to class starting.

Key Steps to Starting a Business

This course will teach participants key considerations that need to be evaluated prior to deciding whether or not to start your own business. Agenda includes: entrepreneurship, advantages and disadvantages of owning a business, primary motivations, key characteristics, research process and business plan, financing and administrative tasks, franchise comparison and business model comparisons, and fear.

Adobe® PhotoShop CC Level 1

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills (ability to navigate Windows environment and file storage using a mouse and keyboard and ability to launch/ close applications, as well as create/save files). This course is designed for students who wish to learn how to use Adobe® PhotoShop CC to retouch, enhance and manipulate photographs. Students will explore a variety of techniques as they learn to work with color corrections, layers, filters, masks, text tools and much more.

Microsoft® Word 2016 Level 1

Prerequisites: Basic computer skills (ability to navigate Windows environment and file storage using a mouse and keyboard and the ability to launch/close applications, as well as create/save files). This course will teach the basic operations of Microsoft® Word: creating/modifying documents, inserting tables, formatting text and controlling the appearance of pages. These skills will enable you to create a structured and highly effective document. This class is designed for students who wish to use this application to become more productive in their daily work responsibilities. It provides the fundamental knowledge and techniques needed to advance to more complex Word features.
