A Katy resident and bestselling Christian author will host a book signing event at the Bagel Café tomorrow morning. David Gregory is celebrating the release of his 12th book, One of Us. It poses the premise of what if God came to the 21st century?

Author David Gregory will be at the Bagel Café tomorrow, June 6, 2025, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. signing his latest book, One of Us.
“What if, instead of coming to first century Israel, Jesus came instead to 21st century America?” Asks bestselling author David Gregory. “Basically, I have taken the story presented in the four New Testament gospels and transposed them onto our time and culture.”

One of Us is Gregory’s 12th book. Bagel Café is a fitting location for his signing as he frequently writes there and says it is one of his favorite places in Katy.
His latest book has been over a decade in the works as he got the idea for it the summer of 2016 and then drove to the Rio Grande Valley for research.
“I wanted to present the person, life, and work of Jesus to those not that familiar with the gospels in a way that was both biblically accurate and highly engaging,” says Gregory. “I'd like people to be able to read One of Us and say, ‘That was a great read. I never really realized that's who Jesus is and why he came.’”
Gregory hopes One of Us will be engaging to both Christ followers and those who have yet to find Him. He says he wants readers to say, ‘I’ve never really looked at it that way!’
Gregory grew up in the West Houston area back when the freeway only went as far as Gessner. His first home after college was just off Mason Road. He’s moved around but returned to Katy in 2014 and like many, can’t believe the growth.
He loves spending time at the Bagel Café, and says that they have the best bagels, coffee, and staff. His favorite outdoor place is Willow Fork Park where he often plays disc golf for exercise.
Advice and Thoughts of Publishing
Gregory remarks are how much the publishing world has changed since he published his first book in 2005.
“They (Random House) did all the marketing, now authors themselves do most of the marketing,” explains Gregory. “That means social media marketing and email marketing. Traditional publishers aren't interested in your book unless it is truly exceptional (which is rare), or you have a large social media following already, or you have a ready-made platform for sales (such as regular speaking gigs in front of large audiences).”
Gregory says that getting a book on Amazon is the easy part, figuring out how to market it is the tricky part.
Gregory stresses the importance of trusting God. “I've almost had nothing to do with the success any of my books have had, other than writing them,” he says.
Gregory has experienced a lot of success and continues to as his novel, The Last Christian is currently being written for a streaming series. His self-published Dinner with a Perfect Stranger was picked up by Waterbrook Press (Random House) and became a New York Times’ bestseller. An independent film producer turned it into a film plus two sequels.
“My total contribution to all of this, beyond the writing, has been almost zilch,” says Gregory. “God has arranged all the rest.”
