As the community is still mourning the loss of Katy ISD's West Memorial Junior High Assistant Principal, Susie Garza, two public celebrations have been planned this week in her honor.
Garza was tragically killed in a car accident on the way back from a family vacation on June 14, 2018. Her daughter, Rosie, was with her at the time and was flown via life-flight to a hospital in New Mexico. Rosie was released on June 21 and has returned to Houston.
Candlelight Vigil on Thursday
The community is holding a Candlelight Vigil in loving memory of Garza. The community is invited to join in prayer for the family and students impacted by this loss. The vigil will be held at the West Memorial Pavilion (Kingsland & Promenade) on Thursday, June 28 at 7:30 PM. Candles will be provided.
Celebration of Life on Saturday
A public memorial service will be held at Schmidt Funeral Home on Grand Parkway on Saturday, June 30 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Garza will be laid to rest with her parents and two sisters, Mary Ruth and Dominga, in a private family ceremony in Rockdale, Texas.
Garza's Obituary
"She was the most wonderful woman that anyone could have the good fortune to meet. She was kind, patient and generous. Her amazing laughter could lighten any situation and her smile would light up a room. She was always a pillar of strength for anyone who needed to rely on her. The strength of her love could be felt almost tangibly by all who knew her. Her generous and loving spirit allowed her to reach and impact even the most troubled students. Even years later, former students say how much they loved her and how she changed their lives. Susie's strength and determination to help others was deeply ingrained in her daughters. With her encouragement, they have become a nurse and a teacher, in order to follow her example and serve the community." Click here to read Garza's full obituary.
