A Katy mom and her three sons are now faced with rebuilding their lives after a devastating house fire on Friday took all their possessions including medical supplies for family members with health conditions.

On Friday, the skies around the Elyson community filled with smoke as a family’s home was engulfed in flames.

“The boys had such a great week at school, I gave them a special beignet treat and took a moment to rest while they worked on housework,” says Shanita, the renter of the home. “We clean every Friday so we can play on the weekend. During that time, a neighbor knocked on the door ad told my son that our garage was on fire.”
Cy Fair Fire Department, which services that Elyson subdivision, was quick to the scene but the fire still consumed almost everything. Due to the family having medical issues that range from pulmonary issues to a deaf child, they have been advised not to reenter the home to try and salvage any items.
The home is a rental and the landlord was quick to get to the scene. Since the fire marshal quickly ruled it not to be of a negligent orgin, he will be able to start working with insurance. The renter did not have renters insurance, as many people do not know that this is needed.
The Elyson community was quick to respond. A dinner was provided for the family, a two-night stay in a local hotel, and some cash. The community also put together a Go Fund Me account that was split between the renter and the homeowner. That account has since been paused and a new one has been set up for the single mom of three boys ages 8, 10, and 14.

Clothes, shoes, school supplies, personal care items, electronics, sofas, beds, dining tables, chairs, desks, appliances, other furniture, pots and pans, refrigerated & frozen foods, pantry items, and so much more will need to be replaced. Their family Tahoe was totally consumed by the flames.
“I’m very proud to call Elyson my home because, in every hardship, our community comes together,” says Ahmad Yassin, a resident who immediately worked to help the family. “The way neighbors step up for one another shows the true spirit of Elyson, and it’s what makes this place so special.”
While Cy Fair Fire Department does not know what caused the fire, negligence was ruled out.
