Reappraisals possible for properties in Katy ISD boundaries

The Katy ISD Board of Trustees has approved a resolution requesting the appraisal districts of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties to reappraise Katy ISD zoned homes and businesses flooded as a result of Harvey.

By law, property owners must continue to pay taxes on the full value of their property, even if it has been damaged or destroyed. Additionally, only a taxing entity, such as a school district, can request a reappraisal of a property after a county has completed its appraisal process for the year. Clearing a way for relief

“While no homeowner will be required to seek a reappraisal of their home as a result of the Board’s action, this resolution will clear the way for thousands of our families who are recovering from Harvey to seek tax relief on properties damaged by the storm,” said Lance Hindt, Katy ISD superintendent.

The Katy area weathered a historical storm last month which left thousands of residents displaced and a number of neighborhoods destroyed. When the three appraisal districts approve Katy ISD’s request, the Board of Trustees will have created options for residents still facing housing, financial and recovery challenges due to the storm.
