Many Katyites rejoiced last week as a large and very new HEB opened making trips to the grocery store much easier. The new store will be the anchor to multiple retail tenants as north Katy continues to develop to meet the community growth.

The HEB across from Katy Park on Morton Road opened last week making grocery shopping so much easier for Katy families that live in large master-planned communities like Elyson, Ventana Lakes, King Crossing, Cane Island and many more. This marks the 5th HEB store in the Katy area.

“I love having this new HEB,” says King Crossing resident Leigh Ishee. “It is bigger and there is more selection. Plus, I don’t have to drive over twenty minutes to get to it. It is a lot easier to get to from my house.”

The new store is across from the 100-acre Katy Park where many children play baseball and soccer. Curbside picks and trips to the grocery store combined with practices and games are sure to become a new routine for many Katy families.

“I love HEB! The new HEB is gorgeous, big open floor plan and lots of food options to choose from,” says Elyson resident Gina Sampson. “We need another HEB on the north side of I-10 because the new HEB is already so crowded.”

Northwest Katy Continues to Grow

The northwestern quadrant of the Katy community continues to grow and expand. Master-planned communities such as Elyson, Sunterra and more attract families wanting to call Katy home.

Katy ISD opened two new elementary schools (Faldyn Elementary and Youngblood Elementary) in the area this year.  The district is currently building two new schools that will open next academic year. Both Nelson Junior High and Freeman High School will work to alleviate overcrowding in Katy schools.

“I love our new HEB,” says Sharon Wright. “We need more restaurants that are not fast food.”

As the area continues to grow more businesses are coming. Earlier this year the new Target opened at 99 and FM 529. Chick-fil-A , McDonald’s, and American Family Care (an urgent care) near the Target are now open. Whataburger, Taco Bell, Taco Cabana, Salata, Heartland, Petsmart, Pet Supplies Plus, EOS Fitness, and more are either under construction or planned.

In addition to wanting more restaurant selections that aren’t fast food, many residents hope for a Best Buy, Lowes/Home Depot, Total Wine, and more large retail that limits their commute to such stores.

While the new HEB is a big win for Katy families that live in these newer developed areas, it is a reminder of how much more is needed.

“With all the new construction and small backroads, before long, it will take 30 minutes to drive from Elyson to the new HEB on Morton Road,” says resident Evelyn Ludford.
