KATY MAGAZINE I AUGUST 2019
By Natalie Cook Clark
Katy ISD starts the 2019-2020 school year by moving from a half-day preschool to a full-day preschool program as a result of House Bill (HB) 3 that was passed by the 86th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.
Pre-K Extends to Full Day
Full-day classes for pre-k students in KISD will begin on August 14, 2019. Parents of registered pre-k students will receive a notification letter mailed on today, Tuesday, July 30, notifying them that their child is eligible to begin full day pre-k on the first day of school.
"We are excited to have the opportunity to serve our youngest learners in a full-day setting,” said Chief Academic Officer Dr. Christine Caskey. “As a result of this change, it is important that parents confirm their assigned pre-k campus along with their bell schedule,” added Caskey.
KISD Expands Preschool Campuses
To accommodate a full day of instruction, the district has expanded the number of campuses offering pre-k. See the list below.
Elementary Group 1
8:00 am – 3:20 pm
Elementary Group 2
8:20 am - 3:40 pm
Parents of Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) students will also receive a notification letter today informing them that their PPCD child will begin half-day classes on the first day of school and will continue as half-day enrollees pending an Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) change of placement and determination if they are pre-k eligible.
Change Comes With Planning Issues
This new change, while ultimately beneficial to our students, will cause issues for Katy families who have already made half-day arrangements with private/church school options in order to bring their children to a full-day program.
Free Meals and Information
All pre-k students receive free breakfast and lunch. However, transportation is not provided. For questions concerning the full-day pre-k program please visit Katy ISD Office of Interventions.
