The tale of Katy mail theft is not new news, but this crime continues to be rampant in the area. This time it’s believed that the postal office was aware of a stolen master key that resulted in a Katy Neighborhood theft.

Last week a stolen master key was used to steal prescriptions, credit cards, and other sensitive documents from a community mailbox in the Katy Manor subdivision.
According to the Katy Police Department, a suspect has been arrested. Reports indicate that the postal office had been made aware of the stolen master key that led to the theft and never alerted the community to the potential dangers.
The local Postal Service released a media response.
“The security and sanctity of the mail is of paramount importance to the U.S. Postal Service. This includes ensuring mail receptacles are secured, and in good condition at all times.”
The theft of or tampering with mail is considered a federal crime and those found guilty can receive up to 180 days in jail to 10 years in prison. Judges can also issue a fine from $4,000 to $10,000 and more if mail was stolen from the elderly or disabled.
In recent years, the question of who is responsible for the maintenance of community mailboxes often comes up. According to the Postal Service, it is the responsibility of Homeowner’s Associations to maintain community mailboxes.
