Katy Restaurants Announce Plans Amid Challenging Crawfish Season

KATY MAGAZINE NEWS

By Natalie Cook Clark

‘Tis the season for football, fun and crawfish; but the favored meal is having a slow start. Weather conditions have created a shortage of crawfish that is hopefully short lived.

Katy Restaurants Make Plans on Crawfish Season

Katy restaurants are working to get crawfish on their tables and in front of excited Katyites. Some popular spots have decided to wait just a bit to rollout those crawdads while others will welcome you this weekend.

Kelli Messer is the owner of Texas Borders Bar and Grill (Richmond and Katy locations,) and like so many, is in communication with her crawfish vendor in regards to when she’ll roll out crawfish this season.

“I have very high standards when it comes to my crawfish that I buy,” says Messer. “No exception! I only use great quality and clean crawfish. My vendor keeps one farmer who produces beautiful crawfish just for Texas Borders. Sadly, that farm is not quite ready to release crawfish and I’m ok with that.”

While Messer’s has had good crawfish the past few weeks, Messer wants to wait for that better farmer and until the price can go down.

“I don’t believe in gouging my customers with high pricing even though the demand is there,” says Messer, who has decided to wait until after Mardi Gras until the market price goes down.

She isn’t alone in waiting. Clay’s Restaurant and also BB’s Tex-Orleans. Both popular restaurants say that they are still probably a few weeks away from having crawfish.

“My customers have come to love and obsess over Borders crawfish for so many years and I NEVER disappoint,” says Messer.

Many Katy restaurants are just as anxious to get crawfish as the customers are.

“This has been a crazy season for crawfish! Two things can affect crawfish and that’s lack of water and cold,” says Anthony Petronella, owner of Scholars and Scoundrels. “It’s been a slow start, but now with the recent rain I think we’ll see things pick up, I hope so.”

Petronella says that he knows a vendor with 100 acres. Typically, this time of year they can fill 400 bags a day. Last week they filled 5 bags of good crawfish.

The newest Scholars and Scoundrels location in Elyson will offer crawfish this weekend at $12.99 per pound (3 pound minimum.) Of course, supplies will be limited.

While no one is happy with the slow start to the crawfish season, Katy restaurants are still bringing families exciting deals.

Scholars and Scoundrels is offering all you can eat shrimp and snow crab ($50 a person) on Tuesdays.

In addition to great deals, Texas Borders Bar and Grill is rolling out a new brunch menu at their Pin Oak location along with live music this Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

So many great Katy restaurants have much to offer. Always check their websites and social media platforms for deals and updates.

That’s how Katy favorites like Texas Borders Bar and Grill will announce the return of their famous crawfish.

“So be patient everyone, the best are coming real soon,” says Messer.
