Katy ISD’s Tompkins High School Track and Field Team are now State Champions for the first time. Sprinting star Blake Hamilton broke the national record aiding in the team meeting this achievement.

“I knew all the work we put in throughout the year prepared me for this moment,” says Hamilton. “To make history alongside my teammates and coaches means everything to me. We pushed each other every day, and I wanted to leave a legacy for Tompkins track.”

Hamilton exploded from the blocks for his 200-meter race and ended with a time of 19.86, which broke the record.

Hamilton’s historic finish highlighted a commanding performance by the Falcons, who captured the Class 6A team state championship with 47 points, finishing 20 points ahead of the runner-up. This accomplishment was the first Class 6A UIL State Title for Katy ISD.

“I have a great group of young men who believed in each other all year,” says head coach Anthony Escamilla. “We talk about ‘winning with culture,’ and that culture starts with family, community and believing in one another. This team stayed together through adversity and rose to the occasion on the biggest stage.”

Tompkins also claimed gold in the 4x100-meter relay as he, Omotade Bello, Joseph Ojeyinka and Silas Scutt posted a blazing time of 40.12 seconds. That same team ran a 39.90 at the district meet, which was the fastest in the state of Texas. The Falcons added a silver medal in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:24.07.

The Falcons’ performances cemented Tompkins as one of the premier track and field programs in Texas while placing Hamilton among the nation’s all-time great high school sprinters.
