A Katy mom died on the scene of what authorities are describing as a road rage incident. The victim was armed and had exited her vehicle where two children and a dog were unharmed inside.

A mother was shot and killed in front of her two young children and dog in Katy. The incident, which is being described as “tragic and bizarre,” occurred yesterday, April 1, 2026. The events took place in the 6700 block of Rusty Ridge Lane. That is near North Fry Road and Arbor Creek Drive. This is the part of Katy that is just outside of the Katy ISD jurisdiction. Duryea Elementary, that went on lockdown for several hours, is part of Cy Fair ISD.

Not long before 1:00 p.m. yesterday a woman (later the victim) called 911 to report a “terroristic threat” as she had found a bullet near her home. A deputy was dispatched and on route to meet her when reports came in of a shooting.

The woman, who had called 911 about the found bullet, was driving her white Kia down Rusty Ridge Lane, that does get very narrow when busy. According to authorities, she stopped her vehicle when a white work van pulling a trailer stopped to let her pass.

She exited her vehicle and got into an argument with the driver of the van. At some point she returned to her vehicle and got a pistol. The man, who was also armed, shot her. She was found deceased in the road when authorities arrived.

“This is a bizarre and tragic case,” said Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. “We do not know of any connection that the individuals had or what all transpired leading up to this.”

At the time the woman had her two children in the vehicle. Witnesses at the scene described hearing the 8-year-old girl and 4-year-old son crying.

Sheriff Gonzalez reported that both children are safe yet extremely distraught. They are being cared for by family and friends.

The man who fired the shots called 911 and reported the shooting. He stayed at the scene. At this time no charges have been filed, and the case will be referred to a grand jury.

The Houston area led the nation in road rage related deaths back in 2024 and continues to report increasing numbers. Road rage refers to crimes that are a result from heated, often violent, altercations between drivers.
