Two drivers have been arrested in Katy after Constable Terry Allbritton’s Katy deputies witnessed them street racing off of FM 529.

Street racing is illegal and two young male drivers are feeling the consequences after they were caught racing westbound near the 19400 block of FM 529. According to Harris County Constable's Office Precinct 5, street racing continues to be a problem in our area.
Constable Terry Allbritton’s Katy deputies witnessed a Dodge Ram and a Cehvy Silverado appear to line up to race. When both vehicles accelerated rapidly in competition, the deputies conduced a traffic stop and detained both drivers.
“Our streets are not racetracks.if you choose to participate in illegal street racing, you should expect to face the consequences," says Harris County Constable Terry Allbritton with Precinct 5. "Protecting the lives and safety of the people we serve will always be our highest priority.”
The Texas Department of Public Safety says, “Due to the high speeds, drivers are unable to react to common road hazards or other driving situations, which often results in crashes.”
Both drivers have been arrested on the charge of Street Racing on a Highway. One driver was also charged with Unlawful Carry of a Firearm
Fort Bend County also encounters frequent street racers.
“These street racers believe they’re talented and invincible,” says Constable Chad Norvell of Fort Bend County Precinct 1. “They’re not.”
“We seem to have more on the side roads like Katy-Gaston and Westheimer Parkway,” adds Constable Thompson. “Those roads are usually not heavily traveled at night and tend to bring those crowds. They also have more escape options if police show up.”
In Texas, street racing is a Class B misdemeanor with a punishment of up to $2,000 and/or 180 days in jail.
Katy residents often report hearing racing occurring on roads with longer stretches such as 99 or FM 529. Local authorities caution families to watch out for such dangerous activities that occur late at night.
If residents witness or hear street racing authorities advise them to maintain a safe distance and to call local authorities.
