Elite college football programs were clamoring to sign Cinco Ranch High School's dynamic defensive star, and 4-star Texas recruit, David Gbenda #33.

Multiple Offers

Gbenda, who will graduate in 2019, has received offers from 24 colleges including Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, TCU, Texas A&M, and Washington.

Publicly Announced on Twitter

The 6'0, 212-pound inside linebacker earned his keep among the top college prospects in Texas last year, with 40 independent tackles, 16 assists, 2 sacks, and a total of 8 tackles for loss throughout the season. In their match up against Seven Lakes, Gbenda stymied the Spartan offense with an incredible 10-yard sack. Even Katy's elite running game had more trouble than usual moving the ball against #33 and the rest of the strong side defense.

He publicly announced his decision to play for Texas via hit Twitter account, @d_aavviidd. He took time to thank family, coaches and those who have helped him on this journey.

Words from David Gbenda

"I would like to start out by thanking my mom and dad for helping me on my journey. I'd also like to thank my friends a coaches for helping me develop into the football player that I am today. I want to thank all the coaches who have recruited me and taken a chance on me. I understand in this game that it takes guts will and sacrifice. With that being said I am committed to the University of Texas. #Hookem," tweeted Gbenda.

Gbenda is taking all of the attention in his stride. "It’s kind of crazy to be honest. As a freshman and sophomore, I saw others in my grade being heavily recruited and I just thought, 'I want that and to be heavily recruited by big name programs.' It's so unreal, and a blessing to me," he says. David says that the coaches at Cinco have been crucial in his success. "With the competition we face, the coaching staff has helped me learn the game," he says.

Katy ISD fans can still see Gbenda play on the Cinco Ranch football team through the rest of this season. See the full Katy ISD Varsity Football Schedule here.
