Katy Based Nonprofit Uses Baby Dolls to Connect and Bring Joy to Dementia Patients

A Katy based nonprofit uses baby doll therapy to help seniors struggling with dementia. This unique approach they are nurturing dignity, purpose, and love through cuddles and care. This week, ladies from a Katy senior center made a large donation of hand crocheted baby items for the program.

A passionate group of women from the City of Katy Fussell Senior Center dedicated over two months to crocheting baby items for The Grand Baby Project in hopes of joining their mission to bring joy and purpose to seniors living with dementia.
“I was visibly moved to tears by the beautiful handmade items presented, showcasing impressive artistry,” says founder Tonja Moon, who created the organization from her personal caregiver journey. “Every person living with dementia deserves comfort, dignity and a meaningful connection,” she says.

The Grand Baby Project, which is based in Katy, provides comprehensive training, implementation protocols, and the only professional certification in dementia doll therapy. Through carefully designed baby dolls, caretakers and families are use proven techniques to help those they care for and not just be successful in their approach but see life-changing differences.
“Together, we can nurture dignity, purpose, and love, one cuddle at a time,” says Moon.
To date, we have delivered over 5,000 dementia therapy dolls, more than all the doll therapy research combined worldwide.
“A big part of our success is our focus on sensory engagement,” explains Moon. “Each doll is dressed in texture rich newborn clothing (and a diaper). Each baby is carefully curated for dementia care, from the size and lifelike details to the clothes and even the way they smell.”
This attention to detail ensures that the babies are more than dolls but therapeutic sensory tools.
