A student from Katy ISD’s Beck Junior High was struck by a vehicle yesterday while going to school. Both the District and local authorities stress caution to drivers to watch for pedestrians and cyclists.

A Beck Junior High student was struck by a vehicle yesterday near the campus as the commuted to school. According to the District, the student’s parents were contacted, and the student was taken to a nearby hospital for assessment. They were later released.
“Parents/guardians and all drivers are reminded to be mindful of not only school zones, but also of neighborhood pathways that students utilize to travel to and from school,” says Katy ISD in a statement. “Additionally, parents/guardians are encourages to use this as a teachable moment to remind their children about safety precautions while walking/biking to and from school.”
Traffic safety has played a major role in recent District news as a driver was arrested in a school zone of Franz Elementary last week. The driver was going over 20 mph in a school zone and had multiple warrants out for her arrest.
"I'd like to remind people to be extra cautious when driving through school zones, especially as kids are returning to school," says Constable Terry Allbritton. "We are committed to protecting the safety of these school children and will be carefully watching and enforcing traffic safety laws around our Precinct 5 schools."
The Katy community continues to see significant growth, which leads to heavier traffic in areas where road infrastructure is still being developed by county and state agencies. Katy ISD says that they are engaged in ongoing communications with local and state officials to address road and traffic concerns and continue to prioritize student safety, whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus or commuting my car.
Many crosswalks in the Fort Bend County area now have HAWK lights that help pedestrians/cyclists cross in a safer manner. Students going to school are encouraged to use those pathways and drivers are always to be alert while traveling the Katy streets near schools.
