The Arc of Kay celebrated the major milestone of introducing one of two planned buses this last week during their Barn Dance event. The bus will support those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The Arc of Katy provides day programs, social opportunities, and community-based experiences for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, empowering them to achieve their fullest potential and live meaningful, engaged lives. The local nonprofit was incorporated in 1990 and offers Adult Day and Summer Programs and more. In 2021 a local family stepped forward to provide them with their first permanent building.
“At The Arc of Katy, we are not a program that stays within four walls,” says Executive Director Sandy August. “Our participants are out in the community every single day—building friendships, learning, volunteering, and experiencing new things. Transportation is what makes all of that possible.”

The new bus—one of two that will be purchased through recent fundraising efforts—was made possible through a combination of philanthropic foundation support, generous individual donors, and proceeds from the organization’s annual gala.
The Arc of Katy provides more than 200 community-based outings each year, making reliable transportation essential to its mission of empowering independence and inclusion for adults and teens with IDD. “Because of this bus, doors open. Barriers come down,” August added. “And our participants get to experience the world in the way they deserve—fully included, fully engaged, and full of possibility.”
Several local officials were present for the ribbon cutting at Katy’s VFW last Saturday.

“I love going on the bus because we get to go everywhere—restaurants, parks, bowling, and swimming” said one of the Arc participants,” says an ARC participant. “The new bus means we can go to more places and have more fun with our friends.”
