Katy’s Central Green Park is known for their community events. Live music, festivals and more but they are also the center of local homeschool meet ups. The park hosts a free event monthly perfect for homeschool fun.

For thirteen years, Central Green Park has been hosting their monthly Homeschool on the Green event. The class is free for all homeschool students from ages 3-years-old to 6th grade. It’s an art class and students are divided up based on their age.

“When I created the programming format for Central Green, Katy had a large Home School community,” says Yvonne Arceneaux Parks General Manager Willow Fork Drainage District. “Parents were telling me they struggled with teaching art.”

The Homeschool on the Green program is in partnership with Abrakadoodle.

“Studying art benefits intellectual development. Studying art improves problem solving skills, inspires conversation, puts us in touch with our emotions, enhances creativity, and allows an outlet for self-expression,” explains Arceneaux. “Our lives are elevated with the appreciation of beauty and the understanding that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

At the class’s conception, Arceneaux met with the original owner of Katy’s Abrakadoodle about the idea of an art class.

“This opened the discussion of teaching a home school class at Central Green so kids could get an art credit,” says Arceneaux. “The class was accepted with open arms from the community. We have had a consistent number of students since the class began.”

The class meets during the school year on the last Friday of the month at 10:30 a.m. except during Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

“Art inspires emotion which helps us better understand ourselves and others. Studying the greats gives us a view into the window of history,” says Arceneaux. “Art is loved by people around the globe. As students enter the business world, art offers another avenue in which to connect, relate and build relationships through conversation. Art shows us endless possibilities.”
