Three Katy ISD students were honored in a ceremony yesterday for their quick actions that saved the lives of a 5-year-old boy and his great-grandmother. Both had ended up in a Katy Bayou behind the Nottingham neighborhood when the students heard their yells and rushed to offer help.

Last March a 5-year-old boy lost control of his bike and fell into a bayou behind the Nottingham neighborhood. His great-grandmother, who had been walking with him during his bike ride, went in to save him but then the two were trapped with smooth sides on either side of the bayou.

Three teenagers (Holden Dugger, Chase Brooks, and Lauren Lawler) who attend Taylor High School and Tompkins High School heard cries for help and rushed to the scene. Water was at the great-grandmother’s mouth when she was on her toes, and she struggled to keep her great-grandson up.

Yesterday, in a ceremony at Kingsland Baptist Church, the three teenagers were awarded the “Precinct 5 Constable’s Certificate of Appreciation.”

“Because of the quick thinking and actions by these three good samaritans, no one was seriously injured,” says Harris County Constable Terry Allbritton.

According to Harris County Sergeant Mirran who was called to the scene, the drop from the concrete incline into the water was 10-feet so getting to them was a challenge. The boy was very scared and held tightly to his great-grandmother through the ordeal. The boy said that he knew she’d never let him go.

“This was such a blessing,” says Sergeant Mirran. “We all love happy news and happy endings. This could have easily ended differently.”

Katy is full of walking trails near creeks, community lakes, and bayou spaces. When out enjoying these trails it’s important to take precautions and know your surroundings and capabilities.

Thank You for Love, Compassion, Quick Thinking

“Thank you for your love and compassion and care when we needed it,” said the great-grandmother as she hugged Holden Dugger. “I just thank you so much.”

“Our community is fortunate to have so many beautiful hike and bike trails that wind through our parks and green spaces, in many cases along our bayous,” says Harris County Constable Terry Allbritton. “They’re a place for families to enjoy the outdoors together. But we want to remind everyone to use caution, especially when young children or senior citizens are involved. Situations can change in an instant, as we saw in this case. Thankfully, the quick thinking and bravery of these three young men and women prevented a tragedy.”
