Meet Your Katy ISD School Board: A Few Fun Facts You May Not Know

January 31, 2018

By Jennifer Skelton

Just in time for January, School Board Appreciation Month, Katy Magazine would like to extend a big thank you to our board of trustees for their dedicated volunteers. We would also like to give Katy a glimpse into a few fun facts about your school board you may not have known.

ASHLEY VANN, President, is a graduate of James E. Taylor High School and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications from Southern Methodist University. After working in the television and advertising industries, Vann dedicated herself to public service and volunteering. Vann was elected to the Katy ISD Board of Trustees in May 2014.

She and her husband, J Scot, a Katy High School graduate, have been married for 23 years and have three children, two currently enrolled in KISD and one a graduate currently attending the University of Oklahoma. Vann has lived in Katy for nearly 30 years.

Ashley was on the Pacesetters Drill Team at Taylor High School and she and her mother are the founding members of the Katy Chapter of National Charity League. She and her husband both grew up in Katy and graduated the same year but did not meet until they were in college at different universities.

COURTNEY DOYLE, Vice President, was elected to the board in May 2014.

Courtney is a mom to six children ranging in age from 5 to 18, and was a long-time PTA president or Vice President for several schools in Katy ISD. After being a stay-at-home mom for 25 years, Courtney went to real estate school and has been a realtor for almost 2 years, although she already had a degree in radiology.

In 2017, Courtney bravely shared her journey with a diagnosis of Melanoma on her blog. She went through this battle before, during and after Harvey. Because of her bravery, many people sought treatment of a suspicious mole on their skin.

She loves crafting and can be found roaming Hobby Lobby looking for her next project. Her secret talent is painting. Her favorite book is the Bible and she enjoys all genres of music. As a family, they love going to movies and go often.

CHARLES GRIFFIN, Secretary, was elected to the board in May 2012. His term expires this year.

After serving our country in the Air Force, Charles became a commercial pilot and currently flies for United Airlines. He loves to fly and often sees friends and community members on his flights.

Charles and his wife are Katy High graduates who met in 8th grade. They dated on and off in high school but by the time they graduated, were on and now together over 30 years.

In addition to planes, Charles can also operate tractors, skid steers and, hopefully soon, an excavator. He used to hunt and fish on the property that is now Cinco Ranch.

REBECCA FOX, Member, has been a member since 2004 and is currently the longest running member on the board. She has held every position at least once, including twice as Board president. Fox was named a Master Trustee from TASB (Texas Association of School Boards).

A long-time volunteer in leadership on PTA boards, Rebecca served at Hayes Elementary, Creech Elementary, Beck Jr. High and Cinco Ranch High School, where she was named Volunteer of the Year.

She is still heavily involved in schools and spends many hours visiting, volunteering, and helping at many campuses.

Rebecca is a part-time motivational speaker and parent educator. She has performed in musical theater and stand-up comedy. Not a very fun fact, but Rebecca's home was destroyed in Harvey and she and her husband are currently rebuilding.

BILL LACY, Member, was elected to the school board in May of 2017.

Bill is the father of four children who graduated from Cinco Ranch, Taylor and Katy High Schools.

Since moving to Katy over 21 years ago, Bill has served our community through many organizations such as church, Katy Visual and Performing Arts, and Katy Christian Ministries.

Bill loves to cook and specializes in Cajun. He loves riding his motorcycle, a Harley Davidson Road Glide. Bill has three granddaughters and another granddaughter on the way.

BRYAN MICHALSKY, Member, has served our community on the school board since May 2012. His term expires this year.

Michalsky has lived in Katy for six years and currently works as Chief Financial Officer for Cotton Holdings, Inc. and sits on the Advisory Board for Cotton Foundation that is dedicated to helping children affected by life-changing challenges. He has served the Katy community through various sports organizations. He also serves Katy ISD through both the Seven Lakes and Katy High School Booster Clubs.

Bryan is the father of five in college and four in Katy ISD. Bryan is very active in his church and school booster clubs.

Bryan is a baseball and Astros fan and is a men's small group leader at his church, Parkway Fellowship.

GEORGE SCOTT, Member, was elected to the school board in May of 2016.

Scott served as publisher of The Katy Times newspaper from 1983-1986 before becoming Senior Researcher and then President of the Tax Research Association of Houston and Harris County. He also served one year on the local political staff of then Congressman Tom DeLay and served on the Executive Committee of the Harris County Appraisal District.

He has volunteered with a many organizations such as the Katy Area Chamber of Commerce and various youth sports leagues.

Over 40 years ago, while George worked for The Herald Coaster, where he interviewed Marvin Zindler with a female reporter. The interview did not go well and as a result Mr. Zindler was very unhappy with George. The reporter with George became his wife and they will celebrate 40 years of marriage this year. George also grew to respect Marvin for the great things he did to help people who had no place else to turn.

Katy Magazine wishes to thank these dedicated board members for their many years of service.
