Microchip Brings Katy Dog Home to Family Two Years After She Went Missing

For two years a Katy family has searched, been scammed, and prayed for the return of their beloved Belle. Now she is home and with her family thanks to her microchip.
Shih Tzu Belle went missing in May 2024 when her family was in Mexico celebrating a Grandmother’s 60thbirthday. Belle’s adventure led them on a journey of prayer, always searching and last month, she was found because of her microchip.
“The moment I saw her, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that it was Belle,” says Taylor Dusenberry. “I knew it was my girl.”
When the family left for Mexica to celebrate Taylor’s Mom’s 60th birthday they got a call the first day that Belle was missing. They immediately flew home to join the search. The best guess is that she followed the dog sitter out of the house and got left.
Taylor and Jonathan Dusenberry have been married since 2015 and have two children: Reese is 8-year-old and Kasey is 6-years-old. The family is expecting their last baby this February.
“Belle has been with us through all pregnancies and now with the family expecting our last baby, I feel complete having her back,” says Taylor.
After Belle went missing, the family made a post on the City of Katy Facebook page and local lost pet groups and were overwhelmed with the amount of support.
“Complete strangers were out searching fields and neighborhoods around where Belle had gone missing,” says Taylor. “People I had never met were walking around looking for her and keeping an eye out. For weeks afterward, I was constantly tagged in posts. Even when the posts didn’t lead anywhere, those people gave us so much hope and reminded us that we weren’t searching alone. That is something I’ll never forget about Katy.”
The Dusenberry family never gave up. They unfortunately experienced scams, people saying they had Belle only wanting money. Their children prayed each night for Belle and that brother their parent’s hearts.
Then a miracle happened.
“On August 27th, around 4 p.m., I was wrapping up my workday in my home office when my phone rang,” explains Taylor. “It was a number I didn’t recognize. A woman on the other end told me she had gotten my information through Belle’s microchip and that she had found a 10-year-old Shih Tzu named Belle.”
Taylor says she was completely shocked and called Jonathan. She was hyperventilating and was still afraid it was another false lead.
They immediately drove to meet the family is Jersey Village and in that moment Taylor knew she had her girl back.
“The reunion wasn’t quite the movie moment I had imagined for the past 2+ years. I had pictured her seeing us and immediately running into our arms,” Explains Taylor. “Instead, she calmly came to us and let us hold her, gave us kisses, but she seemed incredibly shy and shell-shocked.”
They believe that she spend a significant amount of time on the streets.
“She looked completely different from the happy, spunky dog we remembered.” Says Taylor. “She was in terrible condition—weak, matted, skinny, exhausted, and clearly had been through so much—But it was her”
The Dusenberry family describes Belle as being the sweetest, spunkiest little Shih Tzu and she was their dog before they had children.
“Now that she’s home, we’re in a bit of a healing period with her,” says Taylor. “She came back very shell-shocked and reserved, often times needing a lone time. So, we’re letting her set the pace and reminding her every day that she is safe, loved, and finally home.”
Even through this adjustment period, the family has seen so much hope.
“She still loves being petted on, and every now and then, we catch glimpses of the old Belle,” says Taylor. “She has played fetch with us, and I’ve been able to take her on walks, and that is an absolute muscle memory for her. And she lights right up.”
Based on their experience, the Dusenberry family says that microchipping should be a must for all pet owners.
“I see so many found animal post and am always heart broken when the dog is not chipped,” says Taylor. “It is such an easy, low cost thing to do. Additionally,We’re also huge supporters of tracking devices. Belle actually had an AirTag, but I had removed it right before dropping her off because the battery was low. This was a regret that completely tore me apart.”
The Dusenberry family is all back together and Belle’s story is one of resilience and prayer.
“I have no doubt that as Belle continues to heal and realize that she’s home for good, we’ll start seeing more and more of the little dog we remember,” says Taylor. “Maybe a month or two from now, she’ll be a completely different dog. For now, we’re just incredibly grateful to have her home and shes a testament to the power of prayer. My sweet babies prayed nightly for her for at least two years. To the point that it was devastating to hear, but with her being found all these years later, it’s nothing short of a miracle.”
