A home plumbing issue uncovered a potentially hazardous road erosion issue under a major intersection of Cinco Ranch in Katy. Residents should plan their routes accordingly, but things could have been worse.

A sewer line running underneath the intersection of Mason Road and Westheimer Parkway is causing a lot of talk this week as authorities now say the intersection could be impacted for up to a month due to repairs.
A plumber working to repair a toilet issue as a nearby residence traced the problem to the sewer line under the intersection. While inspecting the line it was discovered that dirt had collapsed into the line. Authorities say that while the intersection repairs are inconvenient, that the true concern is that at any moment any weight over the area could have caused a collapse into a major sink whole.

“It is a large void and they will need to identify the problem, fix it, then repair the roadway,” says Fort Bend County Constable Chad Norvell. “Just yesterday, a signal support pole was seen leaning. The pole is being removed and a new foundation will need to be constructed.”
Constable Norvell says that the repairs will take a minimum of 30 days to repair due to the time needed for the concrete to cure.
The light at that intersection is currently operating as a four-way stop and will continue to do so throughout the work.
"Even after the roadway reopens, the intersection will operate as an all-way stop for at least a month. Constructing a new foundation requires time to ensure it is safe and stable," says Commissioner Vincent Morales. "After pouring the new foundation, it must cure for a minimum of 14 days before a signal pole can be installed, with 30 days being the preferred cure time."
During this time of repairs, the southbound Mason Road and westbound Westheimer Parkway are closed and will remain so until repairs have been made.
There are ways to avoid the closure. If you are going southbound on Mason Road, turn right on Highland Knolls, west on Peek Road and then head south to reconnect on Westheimer Parkway.
If going westbound on Westheimer Parkway, you’ll need to change routes before Mason Road. You can go north on Fry Road and then head west down Highland Knolls. Keep driving towards Peek Road or Mason south of the closure.
Just remember that your best bypass routes will be Peek Road, Fry Road and Grand Parkway.
"We appreciate everyone’s patience while crews work to safely repair the intersection," says Commissioner Morales. "Please use caution in the area and follow all posted traffic control signs."
