Harris County Constable, Precinct 5

Marcus Moffett, 21, a serial burglar tied to more than a dozen crimes, has been arrested and charged on multiple counts of burglary of a motor vehicle following a lengthy Precinct 5 Investigation. Moffett has been linked to 12 separate vehicle break-ins at hotels along the Katy Freeway on the night of January 10 and the pre-dawn hours of January 11. Investigators also tied him to several other burglary and theft cases from previous unresolved crimes. Moffett and his accomplice Shaun Johnson broke into at least 12 vehicles parked in Katy Area hotel parking lots in the 21000 block of Katy Freeway and 20400 block of Julie Marie Lane that night. Johnson, 19 is also facing several burglary charges as a result of the crime spree.

The two burglars were spotted by an alert hotel guest during one of the attempted break-ins and detailed by Katy Police Department after a brief chase that night.

Investigator K. Fesperman from Precinct 5's Uniformed Investigative Deputies Division later obtained arrest warrants along with a search warrant leading to the recovery of several laptop computers, handguns, and other personal items from the vehicles targeted in the burglaries.

An estimated 1.2 billion in personal items are lost nationally in vehicle break-ins every year. Precinct 5 reminds drivers to park in well-lite areas, keep windows and doors locked and do not leave valuables in vehicles.
