An Off-Duty Harris County Sergeant Killed Cycling in Katy by Drunk Driver

An off-duty Harris County Precinct 2 sergeant was killed this morning in an auto-pedestrian accident in Katy. The driver has been arrested and charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid and Intoxication Manslaughter. 


 

Around 8:12 a.m. this morning there was an auto-pedestrian accident in the 11500 block of Gaston Road near Katy Flewellen. Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.



Sergeant Killed, U-Haul Driver Arrested

According to authorities, bicyclist was traveling north on Gaston Road when he was struck by a U-Haul truck. The bicyclist was transported by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The victim has been identified as Sergeant Manuel Edwards, 55, an off-duty sergeant with Harris County Precinct 2 Constable’s Office.

 

The driver of the U-Haul vehicle, Earlie Gibbs, 63, has been charged with Failure to Stop and Render Aid and Intoxication Manslaughter. 


"This morning's crash investigation was a team effort to include providing support to Sgt. Edward's family who live nearby," says Fort Bend County Precinct 1 Constable Chad Norvell. "We send our deepest condolences to his family and thank him for his dedicated service."


Harris County Precinct 2 Constable's Office has thanked the various agencies who continue to assist and help in the ongoing investigation. These agencies include: Harris County Constable Precinct’s 3,5,6,7, and 8, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Fort Bend County Constable Precinct’s 1, 3, and 4, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, and the Houston Police Department.


Harris County Precinct 2 also thanks the medical and security personnel, for their professionalism and support during this difficult time.

 

This is an ongoing investigation, but already people are sharing memories and praise for Sergeant Edwards in his service towards the people of Harris County.


According to fellow Harris County Precinct 2 Jerry Garcia, Edwards has served the residents of Harris County since 2006. He moved around the ranks until his passion and knowledge quickly led to his promotion to the rank of Sergeant in 2023.


"Sergeant Edwards was always known as a big guy with a huge, joyful personality around the office, and always had an infectious smile on his face," says Garcia on social media. "He was the epitome of a family man, always taking great pride in his children and wife, frequently talking about them."
