Religious Center Thief Arrested

On Tuesday, August 6, Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office deputies arrested Loyd Richard Smith Jr., 40, at the 3700 block of Center Street in Houston. Smith has a lengthy criminal record across several counties and religious centers appear to be his primary target. He has confessed to twice burglarizing the Katy Islamic Center located at 24740 Saddle Spur Lane.

Stole Money From Donation Boxes

The first burglary occurred on December 1, 2018 and the second occurred on April 12, 2019. During both burglaries, Smith stole money and checks from the center's donation boxes, money that would have gone to help others and support charities.

Sheriff Nehls Praises Team

“I am very grateful that our detectives were able to identify and locate this suspect,” said Sheriff Troy Nehls.

Smith has been charged with the burglaries and is now in the Fort Bend County jail.
