While animal shelters have many needs for supplies, Special Pals is in desperate need of toys to help stimulate and provide simple comforts to the animals they care for. Currently the Katy shelter is near capacity with animals in foster homes waiting to get in.

Special Pals Rescue in Katy is experiencing a critical shortage of toys, the simple comforts that help their animals heal. With kennels currently near capacity, the organization is urgently requesting donations of toys to support the hundreds of dogs and cats in their care.

“Right now, almost every kennel is full, but our toy shelves are completely empty,” says Becky French, Executive Director of Special Pals Rescue. “Toys aren’t just for fun—they provide mental stimulation, reduce stress, and help our animals stay happy and healthy while they wait for their forever homes.”

As intake numbers continue to rise, the need for enrichment has never been greater. Many of the animals arriving at Special Pals come from difficult situations—abandonment, neglect, or life on the streets. Toys play a vital role in their recovery, offering comfort, promoting positive behavior, and improving overall well-being.

We are always near capacity, but it seems a bit overwhelming right now,” explains French.

The rescue shelter is currently at 96% capacity with over 130 animals currently in foster waiting for space in the shelter. The isolation and medical ward is completely at capacity and they have over 40 puppies in the shelter.

Over the last 10 days they have received over 86 kittens.

Their longest stay is Mochi, who has been with Special Pals for 6 months. She is a 7-year-old American Blue Heeler/Mix. Learn more about her here.

While getting pets placed in their forever home, keeping them happy and engaged at the rescue is always a priority. Without enough toys, animals can become anxious, bored, and harder to place in adoptive homes. Providing enrichment helps showcase their personalities and increases their chances of adoption.

Most Needed Items Include:

  • Durable chew toys for dogs

  • Plush toys (especially for comfort)

  • Puzzle and enrichment toys

  • Cat toys such as wand toys, balls, and scratchers

  • New and gently used items are welcome.

Donations can be dropped off at the Special Pals Rescue facility at 3830 Greenhouse Rd. or purchased directly through their online wish list https://bit.ly/3DUOHpY.

Special Pals encourages community members, local businesses, and supporters to rally together to fill the shelves and bring joy back into the kennels.

“This is a small way to make a big difference,” French adds. “A single toy can change an animal’s entire day.”
