By Jennifer Lynn Skelton

As the Katy ISD school bell rang today to begin the 2018/19 school year today, parents could be heard crying and cheering. Here are the last minute "must knows" for the day.

1 - School Zones

School zones for many schools have been changed and/or extended to accommodate the new multi-bell scheduled. Keep your eye out for these schools and the speed limit. Not only can Harris County Constables pull a speeding car over but Katy ISD police are also out. It is illegal to text or talk on the phone while driving in school zones.

Follow the graphic below for help in knowing when to stop for school bus loading and unloading.

2 - Campus Unlock Door Schedule

All Katy ISD campuses will have set times that the controlled access door will open automatically each morning. Children arriving before this time will not be given access unless arragements have already been made with a staff member.

Elementary 1 - 7:35 a.m. (School begins at 8:00 a.m.)

Elementary 2 - 7:55 a.m. (School begins at 8:20 a.m.)

Junior High - 8:10 a.m. (School begins at 8:45 a.m.)

High School 6:45 a.m. (School begins at 7:25 a.m.)

3 - ID Badges

ID Badges are now required for all students in Katy ISD. All junior and high school children are to wear their ID badge at all times while at school. Elementary level children will be asked to wear the badge during lunch and library times.

ID badges are used for many activities in school such as checking out a book and buying lunch. Lost ID badges will be replaced by school staff for a charge.

4 - Visitors to Katy ISD Schools

All visitors must now present a valid, picture ID in order to gain access to the office at each school. After pressing the "call button" at the keypad, visitors must have their ID out and place up to the camera so the office attendant can verify before allowing access.

5 - School Lunches

Lunch pricing and availability is different among the grade levels. Check out the Katy ISD Food and Nutrition website for details. As the children get older, food choices often increase offering items such as baked potato and salads at the high school level. The one item you will never see at any level are sodas.

To apply for the Free/Reduced Lunch program, visit the Katy ISD Food and Nutrition website.

Children have two different types of lunch accounts, which are detailed below.

Meal Account - Money deposited in this account allows the student to purchase only a meal. Students will not be able to make a la carte purchases for items such as ice cream or extra menu items (ex. additional entrees or a single milk).

General Account - Money deposited in this account allows the student to purchase both meals and a la carte purchases. Students are able to purchase all a la carte items

Parents can add money to their child's account online or by sending a check/cash to school. If sending money to school, please put the money in a sealed envelope with your child's name, student ID#, teacher name and amount enclosed.
