A special ceremony at Katy ISD’s Leonard Merrell Center marked the moment for seniors Marlee Day and Emily Melhem.

“These students exemplify the determination, compassion and academic excellence we strive to cultivate across the District,” says Katy ISD Chief Academic Officer Christine Caskey. “Their achievements reflect years of hard work and a commitment to making a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond.”

Marlee Day was awarded a $100,000 C. Jackson Grayson Scholarship from APQC, becoming one of a select group of Houston-area students recognized for financial need, academic promise and a strong commitment to service. The scholarship program honors APQC founder C. Jackson Grayson and supports students pursuing undergraduate degrees.

Day has spent years serving others through volunteer work with children in therapeutic and enrichment settings while also working as a swim instructor, lifeguard and childcare provider. She will attend Texas State University this fall to pursue a degree in nursing, with plans to become an oncology nurse, a goal inspired by her late grandmother.

Also earning a scholarship in the ceremony was Emily Melhem, who earned a prestigious University of Texas at San Antonio Top Scholar award, a highly competitive program that provides approximately $125,000 in support over four years. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, room and board and includes a funded study abroad experience.

Melhem was selected through a rigorous application and interview process and is one of only 10 students statewide chosen for the program’s Class of 2030. The Top Scholar program emphasizes academic excellence, leadership and service while offering personalized enrichment opportunities.

The scholarships highlight both students’ dedication to their futures and the strong support system provided by their families, teachers and the Katy ISD community.
